During the late 1950's Marc Chagall was commissioned to create stained glass windows for the Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical Center Synagogue, located in the Judaean Hills of Jerusalem. Each window was to represent the Twelve Tribes of Israel, each with a unique composition. Chagall made numerous studies on paper before choosing the final design to be made into stained glass. Under the supervision of Chagall, those studies were made into lithographs at the Mourlot studio in Paris by Charles Sorlier, Chagall’s master printer, and printed in 1962. The Jerusalem Windows project was one of the artist's greatest undertakings. Each window is represented by two studies, one more preliminary than the other. In addition, two original lithographs were created by Chagall for the book, containing all the works, that are original by Chagall.
